A WIN ON THE FINAL DAY FOR NEEDHAM MARKET WOMEN

An Amber Cantwell double helped Needham Market round off the season with a 2-0 victory over Colney Heath at Bloomfields.

It was a goal in either half for Cantwell, which lead to a perfect treble to end the season as the team signed off with a win, clean-sheet and handing several development players a taste of first team action to provide a further commitment to player development at the club.

Charlotte Sayer, who played the whole 90 minutes made her first start for the first team playing down the right wing and was joined by midfielder Emma Drake as she also made her first start.

Other players to step up included Poppy Nunn, Cicely Levett, Leilah Hansen and Ella Long, who all made cameos earlier in the season and were given another experience to add to their fledgling careers.

The game was played in a good spirit with both teams fielding mixed sides and giving youth a chance and although chances were at a premium there was plenty of endeavour to make this an entertaining game.

The first goal of the game came on 16 minutes when the impressive Sayer put in a dangerous cross and it found Cantwell at the back post, who expertly finished into the corner.

Cantwell was unlucky not to add a second when her shot crashed off the bar after again brilliant build up by Sayer saw her nutmeg the full back and played the cutback on a plate.

The second half started like the first, but it was Cantwell who added to her tally when her shot from about 20 yards managed to rollunder the keeper into the corner.

Sayer continued to torment and almost teed up her development teammate Long, but her shot went agonisingly past the far post.

Colney could have had a consolation, but Evie McKane pulled off a brilliant save to tip over the bar and then from the resultant corner the ball was cleared off the line by Jodie Sharp, but overall Needham were comfortable throughout.

It ends a successful season for the club with a top four position guaranteed, semi final of the league cup, a first county cup success and reaching the 1st round proper of the FA Cup for the first time – add in blooding some young talent then the future couldn’t be brighter.
