Young Marketmen Beaten By Ipswich Wanderers
Needham Market Reserves 2-4 Ipswich Wanderers
Needham Reserves were beaten 2-4 by Ipswich Wanderers, as the visitors scored two goals in two first half minutes to lead 0-2 at the break.
Wanderers were impressive from the off, with the away side winning a free-kick on the left from range, which was swung into the far post where it was headed over the bar from close range. Needham then had their first opportunity on 6 minutes, as a through ball released a Reds player in the box, on the right only for the Wanderers keeper to come out and dive down to smother the ball behind for a corner. Two minutes later, Taylor's curled shot fron the right edge of the box forced the home stopper into a fantastic diving, waist high, stop, at his far post. Wanderers went close again on 11 minutes, as a long throw on the right was headed at the near corner from the far post, only for the defender to head off the line. The ball fell to a visiting player, whose shot from outside the box went just over the bar. Cheetham was the next to go close for Wanderers, from the right side of the box, forcing the keeper to dive down well to two-handley palm the shot away away at his near post. The rebound fell to Wanderers on the byline, whose ball in was blocked with handball appeals waved away.
Needham though got into the half, as time wore on, as Rose was slotted through on the right side off the box, shoots at the near post only for the keeper to get down to it and put it behind for a Needham corner, on 22 minutes. Six minutes later, a Needham shot on the edge of the box was blocked, followed by a Wanderers shot two minutes later. However, the away side's effort from outside the box was fired over, as the player lost his footing in the process. They say goals come like buses, wait for one but two soon come at once. That was exactly the case here. Just before that though, on 33 minutes, Allen's low shot from the left edge of the box went wide off the far post. Seconds later, Wanderers had their deserved lead, as the ball found its way to the left corner from Ransome's shot. The second followed two minutes later. Ball crossed into the box from the left, picked out the head of Marcus Taylor, who headed past the home keeper at the near post. Wanderers then had the final two chances of the opening half, the first seeing another cross in from left by the visitors, again finding a man at the near post who stuck out a leg but could only direct the ball wide, on 38 minutes. A minute later, Ward founs his way through on the right inside the box, but the keeper dived down to easily save the shot at his near post. That was the end of a fairly lively first half, as Wanderers went 0-2 up at the break.
HALF TIME: Needham Market Reserves 0-2 Ipswich Wanderers
Wanderers started the second half, looking to add to their two goal lead, with Ward's free-kick a minute after the restart, from the left edge of the box curling over the top left corner. However, Needham got a goal back, on 48 minutes, as Page's shot from outside the box was straight at the keeper, but the ball went through his hands and into the net, to reduce the Wanderers lead to 1-2.
Back came Wanderers though, as they had two shots blocked a minute later, the first from the edge of the area with the second from the left side of the box. On 50 minutes, Wanderers thought they had a third, as a corner from the left was tapped home in the middle, from close range. However, the linesman's flag was up for offside. Despite that, Wanderers did make it 1-3 a minute later, with another cross from the left into the box. This time the ball in was shot at goal at the far post, the defender then cleared the ball off the line, leaving an open goal for Taylor to simply tap into the middle of the net to restore their two goal lead.
Abrahams then went for goal, from outside the box, but saw his shot blocked on 56 minutes. Seconds later, Needham won a freekick on the right edge of the box, but was hit low and straight at the keeler.
Wanderers countered and extended their lead to three goals in style, with Godbold's shot from outside the box flying into the top left corner, right into the postage stamp. Ransome then had a shot straight down the keeper's throat, from the left edge of the box on 62 minutes, as the game continued to flow. Needham then had a penalty a minute later, shot blocked in the box rebounded back to a Marketman, whose shot was blocked by the hand of the diving defender. Abrahams stepped up, as his dispatched the kick superbly into the bottom left corner, despite the keeper's desperate efforts who had dived the right way but couldn't get near the ball.
Wanderers then had a shot blocked from outside the area on 69 minutes, before forcing the Needham keeper into another good save a minute later. Wanderers' curled shot from the right edge of the box, forced the keeper to dive down and palm away at his near post. On 72 minutes, Needham's free-kick from the left edge of the box was hit straight at the keeper, at his near post, with the hosts searching for a third goal. Two minutes later, Rose again went for goal in the box, but his shot was well saved by the goalkeeper, diving down to his left.
With 14 minutes left, Gobbold was left bewildered as to how he didn't score, with his shot on the right towards the far corner was poked away by the outstretched foot of the keeper, to send the ball over the bar. The corner, was headed back across goal from the far post, where it was shot at goal in the middle but was deflected narrowly over the bar. Two minutes later, Watling was then through on the right side of the box, but his shot towards the bottom far corner was palmed behind by the goalkeeper, with the following cross in being headed on towards the far post, but went over the bar.
On 79 minutes, Clayton-Leek was slotted through on goal for Needham, but as his shot lacked much power, it was easy for the keeper to deal with. Wanderers then countered, as their shot on the left in the box was stopped by the Needham shot-stopper. With 9 minutes to go, Needham then fired over the bar from the edge of the box, as realistic hope of snatching a draw began to fade away, into the night sky. Two minutes later, Wanderers then shot wide off the left post, from outside the box as the away side threatened to grab a fifth. Cheetham then went for the right post, from outside the home area, but his shot was saved by the diving keeper at waist height. The rebound was inches close from a fifth, as it clipped the bar and over, as the game entered its last five minutes. Clayton-Leek was then picked out in the box, by a Needham low ball in from the left, but skied his shot over the bar.
Finally, with the last chance of the game, Page headed a cross from the left wide of the near post, as the visitors ran out 2-4 winners.
