Points Shared After Six Goal Thriller
By Drew Kendall
Early Joe Marsden screamer, along with goals from Adam Mills and Reece Dobson seal a deserved point for Marketmen
Marketmen draw with Banbury in a six goal thriller at Bloomfields, as Needham look ahead to Trophy trip to Weymouth.
Early on, Banbury went for goal on 3 minutes, but fired the strike over the bar. Joe Marsden then opened the scoring in superb style, curling an audicous strike into the top left corner from the right edge of the box, after just five minutes. Neither team were really able to hold on to their leads during the game, but Needham could've doubled their early advantage after 8 minutes.
Marsden again with it, but shot low wide of the near post from the left edge of the box. Down the other end, a Banbury effort in the box saw Jessup gather at his left post.
Three minutes later, the visitors again had a shot in the box but was this time low and wide of the right post. United then got through on the right and shot low at the far corner, forcing Jessup to dive down well to palm away after 17 minutes.
Two minutes later, Banbury kept pushing for an equaliser as a ball in on the left found a man at the far post whose effort was put wide for a goalkick. Banbury through did pull level on 21 minutes, Taylor's cross in on the left was headed towards goal at the back post. The effort though was blocked. With Diggin on hand to smash in the rebound. The Marketmen then went close to regaining their lead on 25 minutes, Gareth Heath's corner in on the right found Kieran Morphew, but the centre-back could only head over the bar. The hosts then retook the lead after half an hour, the Marketmen attacking down the eight led to Reece Dobson getting possession on the right side in the box who then set Adam Mills (on his 104th Needham appearance) through on the left side in the box. His great finish from close range was drilled well into the bottom right corner for 2-1 Needham. Marsden then went for goal on 31 minutes, but fired wide of the top right corner. The away side then pegged their hosts back again with one of the last few touches of the half, three minutes into added time. Kaziboni's volley on the right was hammered low into the net by Diggin at the far post, who beat Jessup to take the two sides level into the interval.
It was very much a game where both sides were much better when attacking, with play being fairly equal- but Needham just shaded it.
At the interval, Needham would have been disappointed to have allowed Banbury back into the game twice, but would more than likely had taken a draw before kickoff.
HALF TIME: Needham Market 2-2 Banbury United
The second half began with Needham having a half-chance after 53 minutes, substitute Luke Ingram's curled shot on the left going wide off the top far corner.
Banbury though took the lead for the only time in the match a minute later, Kaziboni's shot curling in off the left post and into the corner of the rooted Jessup's net. Needham however responded quickly to being set back and went close to a swift equaliser on 56 minutes, as Ingram got through in the box on the left and shot at goal from 6-yards out. Unfortunately for him though, his strike hit the post and went wide for a goalkick. Banbury then had a shot on the left edge of the box, but curked over the top far corner after 58 minutes. Whitehead then recieved a booking for fouling Dobson on the right wing after an hour, before the Needham man levelled up proceedings 6 minutes later. Home shot-stopper Jessup's long ball upfield found Adam Mills, whose headed flick on set Dobson through on goal and into the box, as the latter beat the keeper on the left side in the area and slotted low through his legs and into the bottom far corner- a well taken goal. Needham then went close to a winner on 66 minutes, as captain Heath's short corner to Joe Marsden saw the latter cross into the area. The cross though was cleared to Daniel Morphew inside the box on the left, who that ran to the byline with the keeper claiming from a yard off his line. Banbury then had a half-chance on 67 minutes, shooting low and wide of the left post. With twenty minutes to go, Marsden's free-kick on the left wing found Mills in the box. The latter's touch was picked up by Daniel Morphew in the box, on the left hand side, whose low shot through the keeper's legs was cleared off the line by a retreating defender.
Needham then wasted a fantastic and arguably the most simplistic chance of the game to win it, Heath's free-kick from twenty yards out on the left, was taken quickly and short to Dobson in the box. The Needham No.10 then squared across to Baker at the far post who somehow tapped narrowly wide of the post (literally just other side of the goal post), which was the best chance of the game. Banbury were then awarded a free-kick on the left edge of the box with 9 minutes to play, but curled the set-piece over the top near corner. Then on 84 minutes, a Banbury shot on the left in the box forced Jake Jessup into action once more. The keeper advanced off his line to narrow the angle before saving well, with the rebound shot put over his own bar well by the diving giant keeper.
The final chance (and a half-chance at that) then fell to Needham on 86 minutes, Dye's low effort on the right edge of the box deflected off Dobson and straight to the keeper, as the points were equally shared at Bloomfields.
