Marketmen Defeated By Three First Half Stourbridge Goals
By Drew Kendall
Needham lose on the road despite Issa's first Needham goal
Needham Market were beaten again on the road, after dominating the first 30 mins, with the hosts going 3-0 up at the break, sparking a fighting response from the visitors.
The opening exchanges saw Needham edge the possession charts (if there were any), and settle reasonably well into the first 20 minutes.
Thirty seconds in, Stourbridge hit Needham on the counter, but Anderson's shot, inside the box on the left, skied over the bar. Back came Needham, though as Ingram's 6th minute 20yard strike went straight at Wren. The Marketmen then continued to grow, just three minutes later, as lovely buildup found Issa through on the edge of the box. Whose low shot was caught down low by Wren to his right. The hosts then caught Needham out, as the away side had their pockets picked in midfield, but Jessup was on hand to mirror his opposite number, when Thompson-Brown took aim from outside the box on 14 minutes.
Despite the visitors playing well in the first 20 minutes, the Marketmen seemed to loosen their grip on the game as Stourbridge took advantage. This was the theme from the 25th minute, a Stourbridge cross on on the right was partially headed clear. The ball fell to Powell, at the far post, who could only volley wide off the left post. Stourbridge then took the lead on 28 minutes, as the hosts split open the visiting defence courtsey of a low ball across the face of goal from the left byline from Anderson. At the back post, Powell was on hand to tap the ball into the net from a few yards out, as the Marketmen fell a goal behind. Then on 29 minutes, the visitors had a 25-yard strike from the right wing deflected behind his near post by Issa- as the home side searched for a second goal. Stourbridge went close again with half an hour played, with a low ball in on the left found Anderson at the near post, but the forward could only lift the ball over the near corner. The same man went close again, two minutes later, but his shot from the right edge of the box, was saved by Jessup diving well up to his top right corner to keep the score down. Stourbridge then doubled their lead on 33 minutes, as Needham failed to clear a ball in their box, Anderson was on hand on the left to pick out the near corner to make it 2-0. The home side then had a penalty appeal waved away, on 35 minutes, when a Stourbridge man went down in the box, but was waved away by the referee. Stourbridge continued to probe, and grabbed a third goal a minute into added time. Powell found himself through on the left-hand side in the box, and somehow managed to squeeze the ball into the bottom near corner and pick up a brace, following a counter, separating the sides by three goals at the break.
HALF TIME Stourbridge FC 3-0 Needham Market FC
The second half was arguably over as a contest, but did see a fightback from the Marketmen as the half progressed. Before that, on 52 minutes Forde went for goal from close range, on the left, but Jessup made the save. The Marketmen were awarded a freekick on the left edge of the box, on 54 minutes- however, Heath hit it wide off the far post. A minute later, Powell's 19-yard strike was blocked, before Broadhurst's 20-yard attempt met the same fate on 58 minutes. The Marketmen went close on 59 minutes, with Marsden's effort from close range, on the left, going over the bar.
The Marketmen fightback continued, as Issa's shot on the left screwed wide off the near post on 63 minutes, followed soon (on 64 minutes) after by Marsden's shot towards the left corner from the edge of the box going straight to Wren. Ingram then fired wide off the left post from outside the home box on 71 minutes, before on-loan Colchester man Tariq Issa netted his maiden Needham goal four minutes later. Issa stabbed home the loose ball in the box and into the bottom left corner, game on!
That goal sparked Stourbridge into going close to a fourth, on 77 minutes. Anderson's 18-yard strike staying in play via the left post. The Marketmen then had a stonewall penalty turned down, on 78 minutes. Ingram was hauled down in the box, but the referee disagreed to the surprise of those watching on. Needham kept pushing though, as the corner (given instead of the spotkick) was headed straight at Wren, by Dobson at the far post- as the game entered it's final 11 minutes.
Stourbridge then had two chances in the space of three minutes, with the first falling to Thompson-Brown on 85 minutes. However, the Stourbridge man curled over the left corner, from the edge of the box. The second saw Hayden head a corner, from the right, straight at Jessup from the far post. It was Stourbridge that had the final chance, five minutes into added time, as a shot from the left forced Sturgess to clear off the line with the goal unguarded.
