Alvechurch 0-3 Needham Market

Marketmen Poor As Alvechurch Take The Points

Needham never really looked like scoring on a day to forget for the visitors, whilst their hosts took advantage of their poor defending as they sealed the three points in the second half. The game started with Alvechurch catching Needham out on the break, on the third minute, but saw O'Callaghan's shot blocked by the away defence. Seven minutes later, O'Callaghan was picked out on the far side off the box, but his shot from the byline was blocked by Kieran Morphew before the hosts put the follow-up wide. Needham then one of very few decent chances, on 12 minutes, as a cross from the left picked out Griffiths at the back post. However, despite jumping above the defender he couldn't get enough on the ball, as he headed it wide off target. Alvechurch then went close to opening the scoring, after 18 minutes. Yates on the left-hand side off the box squared the ball to March in the middle, who struck the outside off the near post, before the home side did find the net two minutes later. This time the roles reversed, but in similar fashion, with March out wide on the left finding Yates in front off the near post, where he slotted the ball past Jessup and into the far corner, for a deserved lead. Alvechurch almost had a second with Needham poor defensively, shortly after on 22 minutes, as a free-kick on the right wing was flashed across the face of goal.

The Church then forced an onslaught of chances on the Marketmen's backline, with March heading a corner in from the left straight at Jessup, with just over half off the opening 45 minutes played. March then had another shot towards goal, with 25 minutes on the clock, but skrewed his shot, towards the bottom left corner, wide off Jessup's goal. The striker then forced a strong stop out off the visiting shot-stopper, as his ferocious volley at goal from the right-hand side off the box was palmed away well by the diving Jessup to keep the score down, who did well to keep it out. The ball fell to an Alvechurch player in the area, but Jessup was behind the resulting shot. The Marketmen had their goalkeeper to thank, once more on 32 minutes, as Botfields' low shot from outside the box went straight to Jessup.

Needham then tried to maintain a foothold in the game, with ten minutes off the half to go. Griffiths' dangerously curled cross was searching for Mills at the far post, but the winger just couldn't reach as the ball went narrowly wide off the post. Marsden then wasted a golden opportunity to equalise, just two minutes later, as the ball fell to the league's top scorer outside the box but he sidefooted it over the bar. Marsden then had another chance to level the scores on 38 minutes, as Griffiths headed the ball down to him on the edge off the box. However, the former shot straight at Sargeant.

Back came rhe hosts, as the half ended with the sides exchanging half chances, as March had a shot blocked in the box on 40 minutes, before Mills' cross on the left was headed straight at Sargeant by Griffiths at the back post, a minute after. Needham were soon punished for their missed chances, as Alvechurch doubled their lead on the stroke off the interval. Ezewele was gifted the freedom to skip through challenges easily, on the right-hand side of the Needham box, where he made his way to the byline before shooting at goal. His shot hit the inside off the far post and into the near corner, which practically killed off all hope of a Marketmen comeback.

Half Time: Alvechurch 2-0 Needham Market

Wilkins' response to going two goals down at Half Time was to hand on-loan Colchester winger Issa his Needham debut, but to no avail, in terms off a comeback, as Alvechurch maintained control off proceedings straight after the restart. Alvechurch squared the ball to the far post, from the right byline in the box, where March striked the post from point blank range, as Needham were let off the hook, for again falling asleep defensively. The Marketmen then had a penalty appeal on 49 minutes, as Mills fed Griffiths down the left, who feeds a colleague through in the box. The Marketman then went down under the challenge of a defender, but the appeals were waved away by the referee.

Alvechurch then went close to a third again, on 51 minutes, as O'Callaghan was picked out by a lifted ball over the defence to the far post, but stabbed his shot wide off the left post. A minute later, Ingram went for goal outside the box, but saw his shot smothered by the defender. Two minutes before the hour mark, a well worked Alvechurch buildup found Bellis on the left byline, who headed the ball back to Willis only for his header to go straight to Jessup. Mills then had a 25-yard speculative effort blocked a minute later, before he was picked out by a fantastic cross from the left on 61 minutes. The winger found himself at the far post, where he somehow sidefooted the ball just over the bar from a couple of yards out, when he looked destined to score.

Two minutes later, Yates on the left slotted Botfield through in the box, but his shot at the near post was saved by Jessup, diving down to his left. The former then. Hared through onto the right side off the box, but could only shoot wide and across the far post. The same man then went close again, on the seventy-third minute, from the same place as the last, but this time had his shot deflected wide off the near post. Sixty seconds passed before Jessup fouled Yates on the right side off the box, for which he recieved a yellow card, before Turton slotted the resulting spotkick underneath the guilty keeper and into the bottom left corner. That made it 3-0 and way out off the Marketmen's reach.

Needham though had a late surge, albeit too late with 13 minutes to go, as Sturgess crossed the ball to Dobson at the far post, but the Needham substitute headed straight at Sargeant. On 84 minutes, Mills did well to create a shooting position, on the left-hand side off the box, but was deflected wide off the far post with a goal-kick awarded. The visitors then had the last shot off the game, in the third minute of added time, as Mills' corner on the left picked out Sturgess at the back post, only for his volley to be blocked. The final whistle blew soon after to end a nightmare afternoon for Needham.
