First Team Management

Mark Morsley - Manager

He began his football career with Mistley United in the Essex and Suffolk Border League and during his time there he played in and managed all three Saturday and the Sunday teams as well as a one-year spell as secretary! He left to join Harwich and Parkeston in 2002/2003 season as Assistant Manager to Steve McGavin and moved to the position of Reserve Manager at the start of season 2003/2004.  He joined Needham Market in October 2003 as First Team Manager and in his second season he guided them from the Ridgeons First Division to the Premier, the final of the Divisional Cup and also won the Suffolk Senior Cup. In season 2005/06 he took Needham to fifth place in the Premier Division and also on a good FA Vase run.  At the end of the season he was offered the position of AFC Sudbury manager in their first year in the Ryman League. After much deliberation he took the job. In the 2006/07 season he guided them to fifth place and into the play offs, the semi-final was won but the team lost out on penalties in the final to Harlow Town. In the 2007/08 season the club finished runners up in the League, but lost in the play off semi-final and were also losing finalists in the League Cup. He agreed to continue for a third season but following talks with the board asking for a budget that he thought would make the 2008/09 side competitive was turned down he reconsidered his position and resigned.  Season 2008/09 was a transitional one for Morsley as he started the season helping Brantham Athletic in their return to semi-pro and finished it saving Harwich & Parkeston from relegation from the Ridgeons Premier division.  In May 2009 it was announced that he had returned to Needham Market as General Manager to work closely with manager Danny Laws. Season 2009/10 saw the club complete a league and cup double and move into Step 4 football for the first time in their history.  In May 2010 he was offered the position of manager of Leiston, which he accepted, and his first season they won the Ridgeons League Premier Division and promotion. They also reached the FA Vase 1/4 final and 1st round proper of the FA Cup. In May 2011 he had agreed to stay for season 2011/12, and would lead them to a second championship and promotion to the Ryman Premier League. He also picked up 4 Manager of the Month awards and was given the Ryman Manager of the Season accolade. He led the club for their first ever season at step 3 and after a tough start achieved a respectable mid table position when he informed the club he would be leaving at the end of the season. However soon after that decision he decided it was wrong to continue and left his position.  Morsley agreed a four-year deal with Needham Market starting at the beginning of season 2013/14 but his tenure started earlier after previous manager Danny Laws filled the vacancy at Leiston.  Season 2013/14 was a transitional one as Morsley total rebuilt the playing squad with new players and players promoted from the Academy.  Although the season was inconsistent there were some highlights, one being an FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round match at home to Cambridge United drawing a record crowd of 1,784.  The main highlight, however, was an incredible 7-1 last day victory against Chatham Town which put us in the play offs, although the semi-final was lost under controversial circumstances at Witham.  Season 2014/15 would be the most successful in the clubs history as we would be Ryman League Division One North Champions, winning away at Chatham Town on the last days of the season taking us to our highest in the Football Pyramid at Step 3.  Our aim in the Ryman Premier Division in our inaugural year was to ensure we stayed there and that was achieved via another excellent last day win against Dulwich Hamlet, a team who were in the Play offs.  At the start of season 2015/2016 Morsley agreed a new 5-year contract as we continue to look to him to to build the future of our football club in conjunction with our Academy.
