Young Marketmen Hit Ten Past Coplestonians

By

Goals from George Clayton-Leek (hat-trick), Ryan Pitt, Daniel Hayes, Matthew Cobbold, Callum Page and three own goals see Needham record their highest win of the season.

Needham Market Under-18s smash ten past their Coplestonians counterparts in their final home game of the season. The Young Marketmen have now won all of their last three matches, scoring 21 goals in the process. The home side started strongly from the off, as Daniel Hayes got possession in the box before laying off to Noah Collard on the edge of the box whose fierce strike went just wide of the top right corner, with just 2 minutes played. Needham had another good chance a minute later as George Clayton-Leek fed Noah Collard on the left byline in the box. The latter’s powerful strike however was palmed behind by the keeper, although the flag was up for offside.

Needham then had another opportunity on 4 minutes, this time George Clayton-Leek was set through in the box, as the midfielder’s shot towards the left corner was put behind by the keeper for a corner. The hosts though did go in front with 6 minutes on the clock, Clayton-Leek bursting through into the right hand side in the box who played a one-two with Daniel Hayes to reach the byline, where the former blasts into the top corner despite the keeper getting a hand to it at his near post, 1-0 Needham. Clayton-Leek then doubled both his own and Needham’s lead on 9 minutes, after a great through ball set the goal scorer through one-on-one on the left hand side close to goal. The first time low strike found the bottom left corner to make it 2-0. With 12 minutes on the clock, Needham won a free-kick on the edge of the box, as Moah Collard stepped up to shot just over the crossbar.

A minute later, it was 3-0 to Needham as Clayton-Leek’s low cross in on the right beat the diving keeper in his six-yard box, where the ball deflected into the net of the back of the unfortunate Ellison for an own goal. Noah Collard then set Tom Fitzgerald through on the right hand side in the box after 17 minutes, but the latter’s shot was blocked. Daniel Hayes was set through on the edge of the box on 19 minutes, but again the shot was blocked. Next to go for goal was Sam Garrod from 20-yards out on the right for Needham, on 21 minutes only to fire wide of the bottom left corner. The home side then set Alfie Miles through on the right hand side in the box, close to goal, however Cops defender Miller was on hand to make a great sliding challenge at the expense of a corner, preventing the shot with 22 minutes played.

George Clayton-Leek meanwhile tried his luck from 20-yards out on the right a minute later, shooting just wide of the far post. On 26 minutes, having beaten 3 defender on his way through to the left hand side in the box, Daniel Hayes had a shot at goal from close range. The attempt though was saved by the foot of the keeper for a corner at his near post. From the resulting corner however, Needham extended their lead to 4-0, as Sam Garrod went for goal from the left hand side in the box, with the shot rebounding back of the base of the far post where Ryan Pitt was on hand to tap into the very same corner. On the half hour mark, Needham hit five after George Clayton-Leek was set through on the right hand side in the box to cut inside his defender and fire into the bottom far corner, with the Needham man picking up a hat-trick.

Six minutes later, five became six, as Dan Hayes was again set through on the left hand side in the box who shot low into the net despite a touch of the keeper off his line at his near post. Hayes then had a chance to add his side’s seventh goal on 42 minutes, inside firing just wide of the bottom left corner from the edge of the box. The hosts did add a seventh goal on 43 minutes, although this time courtesy of an own goal. With that the half time whistle went, with the young Marketmen leading 7-0 at the break.

HALF TIME: Needham Market Under-18 7-0 Coplestonians Under-18

With the half just two minutes old, Needham went close to adding an eighth goal as the hosts’ free-kick in on the left wing was inadvertently cleared by a defender towards his own goal, as the keeper flapped behind his far post for a corner, with Pitt lurking. From the resulting set-piece though, Needham shot wide off the far post from 25-yards out. The young Marketmen went close again on 49 minutes, as Alfie Miles set Matthew Cobbold through on the left hand side in the area, where the latter’s drilled attempt across goal went just wide of the bottom far corner. Three minutes later, another good chance fell the way of the young Reds, with Noah Collard’s shot on the right hand side in the box being tipped away by the keeper.

Seconds later however, Needham had their eighth goal, as a peach from Matthew Cobbold from the left edge of the box curled into the bottom left corner. Ten minutes into the half, Kadir Akbaba got through to the right byline in the box to cutback to Noah Collard. The latter’s shot however was palmed away by the keeper from 8-yards out. Seconds later, Sam Garrod tried his luck low on the right hand side in the box but hit just wide of the bottom left corner. After 58 minutes, Matthew Cobbold got through to the left byline in the box, as the full-back cut the ball across to Akbaba who stood just outside the six yard box, who just couldn’t direct his shot on target. The latter then had another opportunity to add to the scoresheet on 63 minutes, as Akbaba’s low shot again on the right hand side in the box went just wide of the bottom near corner.

Soon after though, Needham won back possession as George Clayton-Leek got through on the left hand side in the box, with the low shot however deflected to the keeper who saved with his knees at the near post, for a corner. Then on 64 minutes, the hosts went close again, after finding Hayes running into the six-yard box the striker sidefooted just wide of the near post. Six minutes later, the Reds went close again, as a Needham cross in on the left found Akbaba at the far post who headed wide of the target, although the flag was up for offside. Needham did add a ninth goal on 72 minutes, as Akbaba’s shot on the right hand side in the box towards the bottom far corner was directed into the bottom left corner of Ellison, for another own goal. It was double figures however for Needham just two minutes later, as Callum Page’s shot from the left edge of the box smashed its way into the bottom right corner.

With ten minutes to go, there were still opportunities to add to the score line for Needham, as Evan Collard’s shot from the edge of the box was blocked away. Fellow substitute Jose Santa de la Paz went close to finding the net four minutes later, shooting low from the right hand side in the area, although the shot went wide of the bottom near corner. Coplestonians though did have a decent chance to grab a consolation goal on 85 minutes, with a free-kick on the left edge of the box. The set-piece however was deflected wide of the near post by the Needham wall. Then with the final chance of the night, the home side went close to an eleventh goal after a well struck strike from the edge of the box hit the right post before bouncing away to safety, with just a minute left to play. With that though concluded a superb Needham performance, with the home side remaining third in the table.
