BTEC

The aim of this course is to develop your theoretical and practical knowledge of sport through working towards a level 3 nationally recognised qualification. The course is also designed to prepare student athletes for higher education in a sports related subject or a career in the area of sport.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE’s grades A*- C; recommended these include English and Maths; PE is also desirable or a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport at a Merit grade. Successful applicants must be willing to be involved in all aspects of sport, including practical as well as theoretical.

First Year BTEC Qualification

BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Sport

Course Overview

The BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Sport course is a 1 year full-time course equivalent to 1.5 A-Levels for learners wanting to progress into a sport-related career or progress into Higher Education. The course is designed to reflect both practical and theoretical aspects of sport across a range of disciplines. The BTEC Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Sport can be converted to 3 A-Level equivalents within the second year by studying the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport. Maths & English GCSE or Functional Skills will be included into the study programme dependent on GCSE results.

  • Principles of Anatomy & Physiology in Sport
  • The Physiology of Fitness
  • Assessing Risk in Sport
  • Fitness Training & Programming
  • Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise
  • Practical Team Sport

 

Second Year BTEC Qualification

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance & Excellence)

Course Overview

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance & Excellence) is the equivalent to 3 A-Levels and for students who have successfully completed and passed the BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Sport.  The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma is aimed at student athletes who want academic experience and who may aspire to apply to university for a Higher Education course. There is a good balance between coursework and practical work, so this course will test your knowledge and skills. Maths & English GCSE or Functional Skills will be included into the study programme dependent on GCSE results.

Units include:

  • Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport
  • Sports Nutrition
  • Sports Injuries
  • Rules, Regulations & Officiating in Sport
  • Instructing Physical Activity & Exercise

Progression Opportunities

Student athletes on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport can progress to a Higher Education degree in Sports Science or Sports Studies, which in turn could lead to a PGCE in teaching. Alternative courses are Leisure/Recreation Management, Sports Coaching/Development or specific vocational training in fitness. Employment within sports coaching; sports development; sports technician, academy coach are also other options.

VRQ

VRQ’s are widely recognised professional qualifications, enabling learners to improve their knowledge, skills and understanding of specific areas of employment. VRQs are study-based, structured-training programs which provide practical skill and knowledge required for a certain job. You will complete a qualification, which recognises your skills and competences provide the opportunity to develop new skills and gain recognition of existing talents.

Recommended 4 GCSE’s grades D or above (PE is desirable) or a BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Sport & Active Leisure. Successful applicants must also demonstrate a willingness to become involved in all aspects of sport, including the practical as well as the theoretical.

First Year VRQ Qualification

Level 2 VRQ Diploma in Increasing Participation in Sport

Course Overview

The Level 2 VRQ Diploma in Increasing Participation in Sport is aimed at individuals wishing to pursue a career in sport and recreation, sports development or football specific. The Level 2 VRQ Diploma in Increasing Participation in Sport provides excellent foundations for progressing into the work place. Maths & English GCSE or Functional Skills will be included into the study programme dependent on GCSE results.

Mandatory units of the VRQ include:

  • Health, safety and welfare in sport and active leisure
  • Factors affecting participation in sport and physical activity
  • Sports development
  • Safeguarding and protecting children and young people in sport and active leisure

Second Year VRQ Qualification

Level 3 VRQ Diploma in Increasing Participation in Sport

Course Overview

This advanced level programme in Increasing Participation in Sport provides a vocational pathway into the profession of sports development. The Level 3 VRQ Diploma in Increasing Participation in Sport aims to recognise competence within the workplace for learners in a sports development role within the active leisure sector. Maths & English GCSE or Functional Skills will be included into the study programme dependent on GCSE results.

Mandatory units of the VRQ include:

  • Health, safety and welfare in sport and active leisure
  • Factors affecting participation in sport and physical activity
  • Sports development
  • Safeguarding and protecting children and young people in sport and active leisure

Progression Opportunities

Sports coaching; sports development; sports professional; outdoor activities instructor; leisure/recreation centre assistant; multi sports activity leader; sports technician; academy coach; playing scholarship in America. Student athletes can also progress onto other courses such as the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma and/or Extended Diploma in Sport at Needham Market FC Academy.

Additional Features of the Education at Needham Market FC Academy

During the two years student athletes are given the opportunity to gain extra qualifications, with the FA Coaching Certificates as well as First Aid and Safeguarding.
